Course Description

The School of Catering and Hospitality entails preparation, production and service of food and beverages and accommodation facilities to people in all types of catering establishment.

Course Structure

The school is structured in to two main categories.

  1. Professional courses
  2. Job specific courses

Professional courses have two categories

Professional courses are those that take a longer duration of study and are examinable by KNEC or NITA. The professional courses include:

  1. Food and Beverage Production, Sales and Service
  2. Catering and accommodation.

Food and beverage production, sales and service course.

This category has four levels.

  • Diploma in food and beverage management.

This level is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills of hospitality facilities management and exposes students to operational approaches of supervising and managing hospitality establishments.

  • Craft certificate in food and beverage Production, sales and service.

This level is designed to provide the trainee with skills, knowledge and attitude required to perform as a cook and a waiter/ waitress.

  • Artisan certificate in food and beverage, production, sales and service

This is the elementary level where a student with KCSE grade D- and below starts with. They are introduced to the course at this level to understand various basics in the hospitality industry.

  • Grade Test

This course takes 2 years of study and it’s examined by NITA. The minimum grade required to do this course is D- in KCSE. The course has three modules

Catering and accommodation course

This is an intensive program designed to equip the students with key fundamentals of managing housekeeping and laundry operations in the hospitality industry. Theoretical knowledge and skills training is combined to enable the trainees gain valuable insights into the norms, values and

processes used in the hospitality industry which focuses on ensuring quality service delivery to its customers.

The course has two levels:

  1. Craft certificate in catering and accommodation
  2. Diploma in catering and accommodation.

Entry requirement:

  • Diploma – Entry C- and above
  • Craft Certificate – Entry K.C.S.E D + and below
  • Artisan – K.C.P.E certificate or D- and below
  • Grade 3 to 1 – K.C.P. E and above

Course Duration:             

Diploma is in three modules each taking one year and it’s examined by KNEC.                                 

Craft Certificate is in two modules each taking 1 year and it’s examined by KNEC

Artisan Certificate is a one-year course examined by KNEC

GRADE is a two-year course examined by NITA

Short Courses

The college also admits students who want to take short courses under one year. These courses are designed for professional people looking to join the workforce or become self-employed. Here are some courses that students can take under one year.

  1. Home Care Management
  2. Baking/Pastry
  3. Food and Beverage Production, Sales and Service
  4. Catering and Accommodation

Career opportunities  

The course is a marketable one as individuals who take up the course have several career opportunities both locally and globally in commercial and welfare institutions and also can be self-employed. This includes:

  • Hotel and Restaurant as Food and beverage managers, Executive chefs, Restaurant managers, bar managers, Chefs, Barista, Mixologists, waiters/ waitresses, Cashiers, Procurement officers, Front office personnel, Room attendants
  • Hospitals as chefs, Hospitality officers, waiters/ waitresses, Customer care desk
  • Schools as chefs, Cateresses.
  • Armed forces / prisons as chefs and waiters/ waitresses.
  • Travel catering as air hostesses, airline chefs cruise ship stewards
  • Self-employed as Event planners, Wedding planner, Conference Centre managers, Catering manager, Bakers and cake decorators
  • Bureaus as Home care managers
